AVR 5427 under construction in WINNIPEG as she was in JANUARY 2008. |
5427 |
5427 STARTED LIFE IN CALIFORNIA AND TOOK 10
YEARS TO BUILD THERE. SHE WAS ACQUIRED BY THE AVR IN THE FALL OF 2007 WHEN
ONE OF OUR MEMBERS MADE A GENEROUS DONATION AND IT WAS FOUND THAT THE
ORIGINAL BUILDER HAD BECOME ILL AND WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLETE THE
LOCOMOTIVE. WHEN SHE ARRIVED THE RUNNING GEAR, FRAME, BOILER AND SMOKE BOX
WAS COMPLETE ALONG WITH THE TENDER FRAME AND TRUCKS. THE BOILER JACKET WAS
NOT ASSEMBLED AND THERE WAS NO TENDER BODY OR CAB ALONG WITH ALL THE
PLUMBING.
THE LOCOMOTIVE WAS VERY TIGHT AND THE FIRST WORK WAS TO LOOSEN HER UP TO NEGOTIATE OUR SMALLER RADIUS CURVES. VIC BECAME THE MAIN BUILDER ON THE PROJECT WITH HELP FROM OTHER MEMBERS

VIC WITH THE STAINLESS STEEL BOILER DRILLING A NEW ACCESS HOLE INTO THE BOILER. THE LOCOMOTIVE WAS BUILT AS A PROPANE BURNER WITH NO WAY OF CHECKING YOUR FIRE. WE FELT THAT THE OPERATOR NEEDS TO SEE THE CONDITION OF HIS FIRE SO ACCESS WAS MADE. THERE WAS ONLY ONE ACCESS TO THE MUD RING AND WE WANTED FOUR. OTHER MODIFICATIONS WERE MADE BEFORE THE BOILER WENT TO A PRESSURE WELDER FOR COMPLETION. THE HYDRO TEST WAS COMPLETED IN JANUARY 2008 TAKING IT TO 280 PSI.
VIC STARTING ON THE BURNER. ED AND GIL DRILLED THE HOLES. VIC CUT AND FITTED THE MATERIAL.

SHE IS STARTING TO LOOK COMPLETE WITH MOST PIPING COMPLETE AND MOST DETAILS INSTALLED. PICTURE TAKEN BY BILL IN THE ABEL MEMORIAL ENGINE HOUSE. VIC HAS WORKED DAILY ON THIS LADY TO HAVE HER READY FOR JUNE.
TENDER WAS LAID OUT BY VIC AND PLANS MADE AND PROGRAMMED TO BE LASER CUT COMPLETE WITH RIVET HOLES. TO ASSURE A TIGHT FIT THE HOLES WERE UNDERSIZED AND DRILLED OUT AND THEN RIVETED.
